Trauma is what happens when an experience overwhelms the nervous system's ability to process and integrate it. The event may be over, but the body and mind can continue to respond as though the threat is still present — through flashbacks, hypervigilance, numbness, shame, and patterns of avoidance that can make life feel constrained and disconnected.
What trauma therapy can help with
- PTSD and complex PTSD (C-PTSD)
- Flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive memories
- Hypervigilance — always waiting for something to go wrong
- Emotional numbing and disconnection from yourself or others
- Shame and self-blame connected to past experiences
- Childhood trauma and its effects in adult life
- Trauma connected to addiction, betrayal, or relationship harm
Our approach to trauma
Trauma-informed therapy at Hope & Love begins with safety. Therapy does not require you to relive or retell your trauma in detail before you are ready. We work at a pace that is right for you, building capacity before addressing the deeper material.
Approaches may include trauma-informed CBT, stabilization and grounding work, and compassion-focused therapy. Where addiction is also present, we understand that substances and compulsive behaviours are often a response to unprocessed trauma — and we address both together.
Trauma, addiction, and shame
The connection between trauma, addiction, and shame is well-established. Many people facing addiction are also carrying significant trauma — and many people who have experienced trauma use substances or behaviours to manage the overwhelming weight of what they carry. Healing requires addressing all three.
