Alcohol use disorder is one of the most common and most misunderstood forms of addiction. Many people struggle with alcohol use for years before seeking help — and when they do, they are often met with shame, labels, or a one-size-fits-all approach that does not fit their life.
Therapy for alcohol use disorder at Hope & Love is individualized, non-judgmental, and focused on understanding what drives the use — not just managing the behaviour. It works alongside medical care where needed, and can support harm reduction goals as well as abstinence.
Therapy vs. detox, AA, and rehab
It is important to be clear about what therapy is and is not:
- Therapy is ongoing outpatient support focused on the psychological, emotional, and relational aspects of alcohol use. It addresses the why — not just the what.
- Detox is medically supervised withdrawal support. If you drink heavily and want to stop, medical supervision may be necessary. Matt can help you connect with appropriate detox resources.
- AA and peer support are community-based programs grounded in mutual support and accountability. Therapy and peer support are often complementary, not competing.
- Residential rehab is intensive, structured, and full-time. Outpatient therapy can precede, follow, or run alongside residential treatment.
What alcohol therapy explores
- The emotional and situational triggers driving your drinking
- Patterns of avoidance, stress, and regulation that alcohol has been managing
- Co-occurring anxiety, depression, trauma, or relationship difficulties
- Family and relational impact — including the experience of partners and children
- Shame, identity, and self-worth in the context of alcohol use
- Practical tools for harm reduction, cravings, and urge management
- Long-term recovery planning and relapse prevention
Abstinence or harm reduction — your goals matter
Therapy at Hope & Love is not prescriptive. Some people work toward full abstinence. Others work toward reducing harm — drinking less, drinking more safely, or managing the impact on their relationships and health. Matt will work with your goals — while being honest when a goal carries risk.
