At Hope & Love, we use person-first language — "a person struggling with drug use" rather than "an addict" — because language shapes how people see themselves, and how they see themselves shapes how they heal. Drug use is a pattern with identifiable psychological, emotional, and social drivers. Therapy helps make those drivers visible and creates a path toward sustainable change.
Therapy for drug use is not a substitute for medically supervised detox or residential treatment. It is the ongoing psychological and relational work that supports recovery — before, alongside, or after more intensive care.
What therapy for drug use addresses
- Understanding the emotional, trauma-related, or situational drivers of the drug use
- Shame and identity — separating the person from the pattern
- Harm reduction and safety planning for people not yet at abstinence
- Relapse prevention and resilience in early and sustained recovery
- Relationships, communication, and the relational impact of drug use
- Co-occurring mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, or trauma
- Building a life that supports recovery — values, purpose, and connection
When higher levels of care may be needed
Therapy is outpatient and does not involve medical monitoring. If you are experiencing physical withdrawal symptoms, need medically supervised detox, or require intensive residential support, Matt will help you understand your options and connect you with appropriate resources. Therapy can then run alongside or follow that care.
Drug use and relationships
Drug use often affects relationships significantly — trust, communication, financial stability, and parenting. Hope & Love offers individual therapy for the person struggling and couples or partner support therapy for those affected by someone else's drug use. Both sides deserve support.
Harm reduction and abstinence
Therapy at Hope & Love is not prescriptive about recovery goals. Some people work toward full abstinence. Others work toward harm reduction — using less, using more safely, or managing the impact on their life. Matt will meet you where you are and work toward goals that are yours.
