When addiction is present in a relationship, both partners are affected — even when only one is struggling. Trust is damaged. Communication breaks down. Roles shift in unhealthy ways. Partners often find themselves exhausted, confused, and unsure of what is appropriate to expect, feel, or ask for.

Couples therapy for addiction addresses both sides. It creates a space where both partners can speak honestly, feel heard, and begin to understand what has happened between them — and what is possible going forward.

A note on safety first

Couples therapy is not appropriate in all circumstances. Where there is active coercion, abuse, or significant power imbalance, individual therapy is the priority. Matt assesses for safety before recommending couples work, and will always prioritize the wellbeing of both individuals over any pressure to preserve the relationship.

Relationship repair is only considered where safety, willingness, honesty, accountability, and support are present. Not every relationship can or should be restored — and that is always the couple's decision, not the therapist's.

What couples therapy for addiction addresses

  • Communication breakdown and patterns of avoidance, conflict, or withdrawal
  • Trust repair following disclosure, deception, or betrayal
  • The enabling/rescuing dynamic and how to shift it without rupturing the relationship
  • Intimacy, emotional connection, and sexual recovery
  • Boundaries — what they mean, how to set them, and what to do when they are crossed
  • Navigating recovery as a couple — supporting change without carrying it
  • Discernment when the future of the relationship is uncertain

Addiction types we work with in couples therapy

Support for partners who come alone

If your partner is not ready to come to therapy, individual support is still valuable and often the right first step. Matt can work with you on your own wellbeing, your boundaries, your clarity about what you need — and what a healthier path forward looks like for you, whatever the relationship does.
